Tesla Powerwall 3 review

This review covers standard Australian Powerwall 3, part-number family 1707000-xx-y. Its 13.5 kWh usable capacity describes stored energy; configured AC output determines how many appliances it can power together.

The datasheet allows the headline output above, while Tesla’s Australian customer page describes grid and backup power as up to 10 kW, depending on local conditions. Have the installer state both settings for your site. The higher datasheet rating is not a promise for every installation.

One Powerwall 3 can take up to three Expansion units. These add energy capacity without increasing its configured output; they are different from adding another full Powerwall with an inverter.

Choose backup circuits before choosing battery quantity. On a three-phase supply, only the phase selected at commissioning receives backup. Three-phase equipment generally belongs outside the backup circuit; do not assume three-phase air conditioning will run during a blackout.

For a system using only AC-coupled solar, Tesla allows up to 5 kW of solar per Powerwall in the backup circuit, measured using the smaller of the solar inverter rating or array size. Exceeding the ratio can cause damage that the warranty excludes. An existing inverter therefore needs a compatibility and sizing assessment.

The 130 kg cabinet also needs a suitable location and mounting assessment. Tesla excludes habitable living spaces and recommends avoiding direct sunlight.

Tesla provides ten-year defect cover and promises 70% capacity retention. The defined solar self-consumption, time-based control and backup uses allow unlimited cycles. Other applications, including combinations containing an unlisted use, have a 37.8 MWh aggregate throughput limit, measured at the battery’s AC output. Capacity cover is therefore subject to both the ten-year term and that operating limit where applicable.

The warranty does not name VPPs. Get written clarification for your intended program before treating its dispatch as unlimited-cycle use.

Buy through Tesla or a Tesla Certified Installer and confirm certified installation, registration and internet access. Extended disconnection or non-registration can reduce written cover; Tesla promises at least four years from initial installation, subject to its exclusions. It gives no numerical definition of an extended disconnection. Australian Consumer Law rights remain.

Support evidence checked 21 September 2026. The Australian Business Register records Tesla Motors Australia Pty Ltd from 31 March 2010; Tesla's 2015 annual filing records the Powerwall announcement and Tesla Energy production and delivery beginning in 2015. That tenure does not prove Powerwall 3 reliability or claim speed. Tesla's Australian support page publishes ongoing-support contact details and says Tesla and the certified installer support the system during its ten-year warranty.

The May 2026 warranty says to contact the selling certified installer first. If that installer cannot be contacted, or Tesla sold the system directly, the owner can claim through Tesla. An RMA is required before return. Tesla may repair, use refurbished parts, replace with an equivalent product or refund the equivalent-product market price. The document does not allocate accepted-claim diagnosis, removal/reinstallation, travel or freight costs. Australian Consumer Law rights remain.

Solar Choice's independent buyer guide displayed 161 verified-customer reviews when checked, but ratings remain self-selected and mix installation quality and ownership duration, so they do not establish a population failure rate. Australian Powerwall 2 recall experience must not be transferred to Powerwall 3. No Australian regulator recall or controlled long-duration field study specific to Powerwall 3 was verified.

For an existing solar system, compare a quote for the separate Powerwall 3AC: its Australian datasheet specifies 5 kW AC output and no direct solar-panel connection. Have the installer confirm current rebate eligibility for the equipment and installation before including an incentive in your budget.

Use your evening electricity demand to decide the storage size, and your essential appliances to decide backup power. A quote should identify what stays on in an outage, what stays off and whether existing solar can recharge the battery then. Resolve those details before paying for extra capacity.
