sonnenBatterie Evo review

The Evo contains two battery modules inside one cabinet. Its datasheet separates 11 kWh nominal energy from 10 kWh usable at a stated 90% depth of discharge. Storage capacity determines how much energy is available; the inverter limits what can run at the same time.

The surge figure above is expressed in kVA and lasts only 60 seconds. It is not extra sustained appliance capacity. Ask your installer to check motor starting loads and the combined demand of your essential circuits.

During an outage, Evo powers only the appliances connected to its essential-load circuit. With a compatible solar inverter connected to that circuit, solar can supply the loads and recharge the battery. The documented PV inverter limit is 6 kW; retaining an existing inverter does not automatically establish backup compatibility.

If the battery runs low, backup stops. The operating manual describes scheduled attempts to restart the local supply, which depend on enough solar being available to recharge. Have the installer explain the reserve setting and restart behaviour for your installation.

Although the cabinet is rated for outdoor use, the installation manual prohibits direct sunlight. It also prohibits combined systems. Treat one Evo as the reviewed design and obtain written manufacturer guidance before planning expansion.

The Australian warranty currently linked by sonnen runs from commissioning until ten years or 10,000 complete recharge cycles, whichever comes first. Partial cycles accumulate. Its capacity promise is 80% of nominal capacity, rather than 80% of the usable figure in our summary.

Internet access matters: the warranty withholds its assurance against faults if the battery is offline or remote software updates are not performed. It gives no numerical offline grace period. Certified installation, compliant use and accessories, and the installation certificate also matter; transfer to another owner needs sonnen’s written consent.

The document limits covered transport, travel and labour costs to $200, so ask how a local service visit would be handled. It does not name VPP operation. Confirm your intended provider and any external gateway with sonnen before enrolment. Australian Consumer Law rights remain separate.

Support evidence checked 21 September 2026. sonnen says it was founded in Germany in 2010 and joined Shell in 2019; the Australian Business Register records sonnen Australia Pty Limited from 16 March 2016. Those dates and ownership do not establish Evo reliability. Its Australian contact page tells homeowners to contact their certified installer or use Help & Support in the my sonnen app/portal. It also publishes sonnen Australia Pty Ltd's South Australian address, 1300 number and service email, although the service email is framed mainly for installers.

The May 2022 Australian warranty requires an authorised installer and online connection. For a covered claim sonnen may repair or replace, including with refurbished equipment, but sections 2.4(i) and 3.8 cap its combined transport, travel and labour responsibility at $200. For an uncovered claim the customer pays those costs. Direct app/portal and company contacts provide escalation if an installer disappears, but no distinct closure handover or response-time commitment was verified.

SolarQuotes' sonnen page combines editorial experience and owner comments, including both satisfactory installations and reports of support or parts delays. It is not a controlled fleet study, mixes sonnen generations and has no denominator for claims. No Australian regulator recall or controlled long-duration reliability study specific to Evo was verified. Ask who will service the unit locally, whether parts are stocked in Australia, and who pays labour and freight before purchase.

Request a quote through sonnen Australia, asking for the cabinet, metering, essential-circuit wiring, switchboard work, commissioning and GST to be itemised. Confirm local stock and installation timing.

Take your overnight electricity use and a list of essential appliances to the installer. Ask for a diagram showing which circuits stay on, whether your solar can recharge the battery during a blackout, and how the system will stay connected for updates. Those answers should determine whether one Evo meets your needs.
