Sigenergy SigenStor-5S-5 review

The 5S-5's usable capacity is 5.2 kWh, from a BAT 5.0 module with 5.38 kWh total energy. The published usable figure is measured at the beginning of life, at 25°C and a low charge/discharge rate. It is an energy specification, not a promise to power every household appliance together.

The important constraint is the battery's maximum discharge power: 2.5 kW DC before conversion to household AC. Its 3.75 kW peak lasts ten seconds. Neither figure establishes sustained 5 kW battery-only output, even though the controller has a higher AC rating. Ask for a load assessment that assumes no solar contribution when sizing overnight or outage use.

Larger stacks are separate configurations. The Australian installation guide documents additional BAT 5.0/8.0 combinations on this controller; confirm the permitted upgrade, available modules and installation work before relying on expansion. This review does not transfer specifications from the current website's 314 Ah marketing to the BAT 5.0's 280 Ah cells.

Backup requires an external Sigen Energy Gateway. Sigenergy's 0 ms load-side disruption claim requires the gateway, controller and battery together, under the datasheet's stated load conditions. It does not increase battery-only power or establish that every circuit can remain on. Obtain a diagram naming the gateway and backed-up circuits, with appliance starting loads checked. This is a single-phase configuration.

The current Australian gateway page lists Home SP AU and HomePro SP-F AU options. Its HomePro whole-home claim describes gateway capability; the connected battery and controller still constrain supply. Ask which equipment and solar connections will operate during a blackout.

The installation guide calls for sheltered placement, avoiding direct sun, rain and standing water, with suitable ventilation. It also specifies at least 500 metres from corrosion sources, including the seaside. A coastal address therefore needs explicit attention before accepting a proposed location.

The ACCC recall concerns EC 8/10/12 kW single-phase AU controllers with affected quick-connect AC plugs, sold from 4 March to 18 November 2025. The plugs can overheat and cause fire. The EC 5.0 SP reviewed here is outside that named range. If your quote or installed controller differs, check its model and mySigen recall notification; affected owners should follow the notice's internet-connection and free-replacement instructions.

The Australian warranty dated 26 May 2026 gives the battery and controller ten-year product cover. Battery performance cover promises 70% usable energy until ten years or 19.76 MWh throughput, whichever comes first. The clock starts at installation, activation and registration, or 180 days after factory shipment if those have not occurred sooner.

The earlier Australian warranty dated 29 April 2025 lists 15.84 MWh for the same BAT 5.0. Obtain the warranty applicable to your supplied system; do not assume an older installation automatically receives the higher allowance.

Internet connectivity is a warranty condition: more than 90 days offline triggers Safe Operation Mode, and over one year offline reduces cover to five years from original activation. Skilled installation and compliant operating conditions also matter. Keep commissioning records and report failures promptly; the document requires claims within 30 days. It does not expressly name VPP operation, so confirm intended dispatch use with Sigenergy. Australian Consumer Law rights remain separate.

Support evidence checked 21 September 2026. Sigenergy's 2024 company report says it was established in China in 2022. The Australian Business Register records Sigenergy Australia Pty Ltd as an active Australian private company from 3 August 2023. That local entity shows an Australian presence, but the brand still has a short operating history relative to its ten-year warranty; company growth, awards and staff credentials do not prove product reliability or claim quality.

The May 2026 Australian warranty directs owners to create a ticket in the mySigen app. It describes installers, distributors and third-party service companies as the default service channel. If an installer has disappeared, the documented fallback is the app or Sigenergy's national office; a distinct installer-closure process was not verified. For an accepted hardware claim, Sigenergy says it will arrange on-site replacement or exchange and covers hardware, repair/removal/reinstallation labour, basic travel, normal ground freight and customs duties. It may use a new, factory-refurbished or equivalent upgraded unit. Downtime losses and other consequential costs are excluded under the written warranty; statutory Australian Consumer Law rights remain separate.

Independent field evidence is limited. A self-selected ProductReview sample displayed 16 reviews when checked, including positive installation/app reports and complaints about delayed escalation and recall replacement. SolarQuotes displayed a much larger, strongly positive owner-rating set, while also documenting the controller-plug issue. Neither sample is a controlled reliability study or specific to this 5S-5 configuration. The ACCC recall remains relevant when checking a quote, but its named EC 8/10/12 kW SP AU controllers exclude this review's EC 5.0 SP.

No manufacturer installed price was verified. The Sigenergy Australia product page provides installer and enquiry links. Request an itemised quote for the exact controller and battery, gateway if required, protection, switchboard work, commissioning and GST. Published documentation does not confirm current 5S-5 stock; settle supply and warranty version before paying a deposit.

If retaining an existing solar inverter is your priority, compare an AC-coupled proposal such as the sonnenBatterie Evo. Compare complete installations with the same backup requirements. This review does not establish rebate eligibility; ask the installer to identify the exact approved model and conditions behind any incentive deduction.

Bring your evening consumption and essential-appliance list to the installer. Ask them to distinguish stored energy from simultaneous battery-only power, then demonstrate how the proposed circuits fit both. If joining a VPP, obtain acceptance for the exact controller and battery in your location; a family listing alone is insufficient. Those checks determine whether this small configuration meets your needs or a larger design is warranted.
