Exact battery/inverter combinations require the official SmartShift Compatibility Checker, including SA enrolment approval. The current official compatibility list (updated 8 April 2026) also covers 1KOMMA5, Neovolt, Enphase (with an IQ 7 or IQ 8 inverter), GivEnergy, Fronius Reserva (with a GEN24 series inverter), Hive and REA Power systems, none flagged as beta on that list. Brand inclusion alone is not installation approval.

A family listing does not confirm every model or inverter. Final eligibility rests with the provider.

Before you join

The standard public subscription is $25/month. The current Detailed Information Sheet controls customer-specific tariffs and fees; technology/API services, payment methods and distributor service work may add charges. The SA RSR reference tariff charges 0.75c/kWh ex GST above an 11 kWh/day allowance pooled across each bill period. Indicative scenarios require confirmation of the matching standard tariff and fees; profiles crossing that allowance need bill dates and action chronology. Amber's Market Electricity Supply Contract states "we will not charge you an exit fee" and "Amber does not charge any additional fee for cancelling this contract, either during the cooling off period or at any other time"; no setup/establishment fee is stated for the retail contract or the SmartShift Contract.

SmartShift automates charge/discharge against wholesale prices and offers app controls where supported. Its published direct-discharge floor is 25%; a higher manufacturer reserve takes priority. Current terms permit temporary overrides during extreme market or weather events, require at least 90% internet accessibility, prohibit competing optimisation, and limit Amber-directed cycling to twice per 24 hours. Cancellation requires at least 14 days written notice and control may continue during unenrolment. Technology/API fees may apply when notified.

Common questions

Do I get paid more if my battery is bigger?

Only in programs that pay per kWh dispatched (up to their cap), or that set their credit by system size. A flat monthly or annual credit pays the same regardless of battery size.

What is a dispatch cap?

The maximum energy the operator may draw from your battery in a year. It is a control limit, not a payment — but in per-kWh programs it also puts a ceiling on what you can earn.

Why do most programs need an account with the provider?

The operator may need to be your energy retailer to settle dispatched energy on your bill. If you already use that retailer, a switch may not be needed. If you must switch, check the underlying plan's rates too.

Will a VPP work for me?

It helps if your battery comfortably covers your own evening use first, so the energy a program draws is genuinely spare. A larger battery, or one that is rarely empty by morning, has more room to earn. A small battery on a program that requires switching to expensive rates can leave you worse off.

Do I need a smart meter?

Most programs do. Expect a meter exchange if you still have a basic meter, and confirm with the provider before you sign up.
