Redback Smart Battery SB9600 review

The SB9600 contains four 2.4 kWh modules. The usable figure above is calculated from their combined capacity and the datasheet's discharge limit. Conversion losses, reserve settings and battery condition affect the energy available to appliances.

The grid port is rated at 4.5 kVA apparent power, while the backup port has a 4.5 kW active-power rating. These describe simultaneous output, not stored energy. The manual also gives a 4.6 kW peak without a duration; it offers little basis for planning larger starting loads. Output reduces above 45°C.

Treat this as a four-module configuration. The documents do not establish a straightforward expansion path for an installed SB9600; replacing or adding modules requires charge balancing and firmware checks. Newer Redback hybrid specifications do not apply here.

Backup supplies the circuit selected and wired by the installer, while battery energy remains. The manual excludes high-current loads including air conditioners, ovens, cooktops and hot-water systems. Overloading the circuit can shut the system down. The same continuous limit applies to that circuit when grid power is available.

More energy held in reserve for outages means less available for ordinary daily use. Have the installer explain the reserve setting and whether the existing solar arrangement can recharge during an outage; retaining a solar inverter does not establish that behaviour.

The installation manual specifies single-phase configurations and floor mounting, with no off-grid or generator use. It excludes full sun and exposed locations where wind-driven rain can enter. Provide reliable Ethernet or 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi: losing internet removes remote monitoring, control and fault notifications, and can affect warranty cover.

There are separate Redback and Pylontech warranties. Redback's currently hosted V3.5 document names SB9600 and Redback Operations Pty Ltd. Its earlier-of installation/manufacture deadline makes the manufacture date particularly important for old stock. It covers listed products manufactured from 1 August 2021, requires accredited installation and manual-compliant use, and states no retention percentage or throughput cap.

Pylontech's Australian RB-HVS warranty expressly includes SB9600 and defines minimum capacity as 55% of nominal energy during its ten-year period. That clock starts at installation or six months after manufacture, whichever comes first. It specifies daily-cycle use but no numerical MWh or cycle ceiling. Authorised supply, Pylontech-certified installation and compliant operation matter; defects must be notified within 48 hours of discovery, with invoice and system logs supporting a claim.

Redback V3.5 excludes damage caused by failure to maintain a stable cloud connection, without a numerical offline grace period. Moving a system requires prior written approval; a purchaser of the original property must register the ownership change. Neither document expressly settles VPP use, so obtain written confirmation for the intended program. Australian Consumer Law rights remain separate.

Redback's current site links a 2025 notice about delayed Pylontech replacements and limits its assistance to authorised-channel purchases. That notice is not a new warranty for every SB9600. Confirm the service provider and applicable documents using your serial numbers and purchase records.

Redback's LG recall notice explicitly excludes SB9600; the ACCC notice identifies affected LG batteries in older systems including SH5000. This distinction applies to that recall, not to every possible fault or later safety notice.

Support evidence checked 21 September 2026. Redback was established in Australia in 2015. ASIC records show Redback Operations and Redback Technologies Holdings entered external administration in 2024 and became subject to a deed of company arrangement. The business continued after restructuring, but the public material reviewed does not by itself prove which entity assumed each pre-restructure warranty liability.

This legacy system also splits responsibility: Redback's document covers the system while Pylontech's separate terms cover the RB-HVS battery modules. Redback's 2025 notice says it and Pylontech agreed a process for outstanding battery claims. Obtain both warranties, the manufacture date, and written confirmation of the current entity responsible for labour, stock and legacy claims before treating an SB9600 quote as supportable.

The Redback warranty routes claims through an authorised installer and provides on-site repair/replacement by Redback or a qualified technician, or repair/replacement at Redback's facility. It does not allocate accepted-claim labour, travel, removal/reinstallation or freight costs; a rejected claim can leave the owner reimbursing all Redback costs. Pylontech's battery warranty is repair-or-replace only and makes the owner pay independent testing unless the claim proves valid. Redback's contact form is a possible escalation if the installer disappears, but a distinct published closure handover was not verified.

A self-selected ProductReview sample displayed 15 reviews when checked and contained repeated accounts of delayed communication, long outages and Pylontech replacement delays. These are material support signals, especially alongside Redback's own 2025 resolution notice, but the sample mixes products, years, installers and countries and has no installed-base denominator. It cannot establish an SB9600 failure rate. The LG-cell recall linked elsewhere in this review names certain Redback hybrid systems, not the SB9600's Pylontech RB-HVS modules.

No current manufacturer installed price or confirmed new-stock offer was verified for SB9600. The current website promotes newer Redback systems, while the legacy documents remain hosted. Contact Redback for a quote or support enquiry, naming SB9600 rather than requesting a generic Redback battery.

If supply is confirmed, ask for manufacture dates, the complete system, backup wiring, switchboard work, commissioning, GST and service arrangements in the quote. Have the installer confirm current approval and rebate eligibility for the exact equipment at the time of installation.

For an existing installation, gather the original invoice, manufacture date, serial numbers and commissioning records before checking remaining cover. For a new quote, resolve stock, service and approval status first, then have the installer match your evening energy use and essential appliances to the proposed circuit. A familiar brand name or a larger nominal-capacity figure cannot settle those questions.
