Amber Electric SmartShift review (2026): cost and price risk
SmartShift automates a compatible battery around Amber's market-linked electricity prices. It has no separate automation fee, but Amber's $25 monthly subscription and whole-plan price exposure matter more than any single export spike.

The verdict in one minute
SmartShift is a battery automation service for Amber electricity customers. Amber passes through market-linked electricity prices and charges $25 a month per NMI. SmartShift itself currently adds no fee. Its appeal depends on the whole plan — imports, exports, network and other pass-through charges, subscription and automation — rather than a fixed VPP credit.
This structure is different from a VPP that promises a signup payment or recurring bill credit. SmartShift plans when a compatible battery charges, holds energy, supplies the home or exports. The value changes with actual wholesale prices, the energy available and network or equipment limits. Amber does not promise a fixed return.
For someone already on Amber, enabling SmartShift does not add another monthly charge under the current fee FAQ. Someone moving from another retailer needs to compare Amber's entire offer with their current plan; the $25 fee is only one line in that decision.
What the $25 subscription covers
Amber's monthly subscription is $25 per NMI and is calculated daily. Amber's examples are $23.00 including GST for 28 billing days, $24.65 for 30 days and $25.48 for 31 days. Separate properties or NMIs attract separate subscriptions.
The fee applies whether or not SmartShift automates a battery. That makes $300 over twelve $25 months a useful cost reference, but it is not a standalone “hurdle” that battery exports alone must beat. The fair comparison is the total bill under Amber — imports, exports, pass-through charges and subscription — against the total under the alternative plan.
| Term | Current position | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| Amber subscription | $25 per month per NMI, pro-rated daily. | Applies with or without SmartShift. |
| SmartShift fee | No additional fee at present. | Amber says it may revisit the structure. |
| VPP credit | No fixed signup or recurring SmartShift credit. | Outcomes come through market-linked imports and exports. |
Control, overrides and reserve
SmartShift sends remote instructions to a supported battery. Amber's app provides temporary Charge, Dispatch, Preserve and Consume controls, commonly in 30-, 60- or 90-minute windows. Amber says commands generally take about three to five minutes because they pass through the manufacturer's platform.
Enrolment can place some supported systems into a manufacturer VPP mode that disables schedules in the manufacturer's own app. Amber's VPP-mode guidance says deregistration restores those controls. Check the behaviour for the exact battery rather than assuming every manufacturer works this way.
Amber's battery-access guidance says SmartShift will not automatically discharge to the grid below 25% state of charge, subject to a higher reserve set in the manufacturer's app. Some manufacturer interfaces impose their own floor. Energy below Amber's grid-export floor may still serve household load down to the configured hardware reserve. The reserve field in Amber's app only tells SmartShift the battery's setting; it does not change the battery setting itself.
How the market-linked price changes the decision
Amber's new-customer information says wholesale prices are not fixed. Smart meters are billed using the average of the five-minute prices within each 30-minute interval. SmartShift tries to move battery imports and exports into more favourable periods, but actual prices and available battery energy determine the result.
High export prices can help only when the price occurs, the battery holds energy and the system can export it within its connection limits. Low or negative export prices can reduce the value of exporting. Imports have the opposite exposure: a high-price interval can be costly if the home still needs grid energy.
Amber does offer quarterly wholesale energy price protection, but its scope is narrow. It applies to the base wholesale generation component and excludes hedging, network, metering and environmental pass-through charges. Treat it as protection for one component, not as a cap on the total bill.
The material risks
Automation cannot guarantee the forecast. Prices, household load, solar production, communications and equipment availability change. A battery can charge for an expected high-price period that does not arrive or have too little energy when one does.
Backup energy needs active attention. Once a battery is isolated in backup mode during an outage, Amber says it cannot command it. SmartShift also cannot predict an outage and may have exported earlier. Amber's outage guidance recommends charging, raising the hardware reserve and disabling automation ahead of a known risk. Backup operation still depends on the installed hardware.
Leaving may not be instant. Amber describes SmartShift deregistration as having no lock-in, but release of provider control and retail-account changes are separate processes. The ACCC's June 2026 report found bring-your-own-battery VPP offboarding commonly took two to four weeks across the products it reviewed. Confirm Amber's current timing and any electricity-plan consequences before moving.
The outcome can vary widely. The same ACCC report cautions that some VPP customers may be better off outside a VPP and that operator discretion differs. It does not establish whether one household will do better on Amber than on a fixed-price plan.
Who should shortlist SmartShift
SmartShift deserves a closer look if all of these are true:
- Amber supports the exact battery, inverter, firmware and connection;
- you are comfortable with market-linked import and export prices;
- you want automation and accept the published level of provider control;
- the Amber retail offer compares well using your own interval or bill data;
- you understand how reserve settings and manual overrides work for your system.
A fixed-credit VPP or ordinary retail plan may be easier to assess if you prefer known rates, do not want to monitor changing prices, or prioritise a simple backup reserve. That is a preference and contract comparison, not a prediction that one structure will cost less.
Compatibility and checks before joining
Amber's compatibility page directs customers to its live checker because support is model-, firmware- and sometimes serial-specific. Do not rely on a brand logo alone.
Some integrations are labelled open beta. Amber's beta guidance currently identifies 1KOMMA5°, Anker, Enphase, FoxESS and GivEnergy and warns of connectivity, API, firmware and missed-command risks. That list can change.
Before enrolling, save the retail offer and SmartShift terms, confirm the exact hardware in the live checker, review current service-status notices, and test the hardware reserve in the manufacturer's app. Also ask how deregistration works for that model and when manufacturer schedules return.
